It appears to be a big news day in the world of professional football. While the Broncos are celebrating Manning’s arrival to the team, the Saints on the other hand are receiving punishment for their bounty program. In Don Bank’s latest article, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell brought the hammer down on the Saints. Head coach Sean Payton has been suspended without pay for a year, defensive coordinator Greg Williams was suspended indefinitely and general manager Mickey Loomis has been suspended for eight games, while loosing $500,000. In addition the franchise itself will be fine $500,000 and will be unable to have a second-round draft pick in the 2012 and 2013 season. Most were surprised by how harsh the punishments were for the Saints and wondered if they went a little too far. However, Goodell defended his decision by saying the Saints were threatening the safety of players and needed to be punished.

I really liked this particle article, not just because it gave us insights about the Saint’s punishments, but Banks also gave his personal thoughts about the matter. Even though writers should be neutral and keep their opinions out of the story, I thought this was a great exception especially for a controversy this big. By giving his opinion, we know how the writer feels and what kind of stance they are taking in the issue. Another thing I liked about the article was how it also made the audience feel a little sorry for the Saints. It mentioned how the Saints went from Super Bowl hopefuls to a ruined team. With all the fines and suspensions the franchise have to deal with, the most damaging of all would be their reputation and it will take some time before their image can be restored.
